The Spirit of Africa – AFROSURF and AFROSPORT Book Launches
South African surf brand, Mami Wata, launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund their 300-page AFROSURF book, which documents and celebrates surfing and related street culture in Africa, with profits going to two incredible African surf therapy organisations, Waves For Change and Surfers Not Street Children. In 2024, they followed this up with AFROSPORT, the first book to spotlights Africa’s history and global influence through sport and design.
With our extensive experience in the arts and culture sectors, we strategically planned our two book launches at relevant times in the year to maximise our impact to our target media–leveraging cultural moments like the Olympics. Our team worked closely with Mami Wata to create targeted media lists, and worked with select media on exclusive placements to secure unique coverage.
Thanks to our coverage in Dazed, Hypebeast, AnOther Magazine, It’s Nice That, Creative Boom and much more, the Virgil Abloh-approved book smashed its fundraising target. Subsequent coverage included a significant double-page spread in the Guardian and resulted in the book becoming an Amazon second-best seller as a consequence. With 500m+ impressions and 50+ pieces of coverage, Mami Wata has raised over £1.2m and a follow-up, AFROSPORT, was released in 2024, and we secured spots in AnOther Magazine (again), Monocle, PRINT Mag, Creative Boom (again), Mundial and more.

"The team at Kibbo Kift did a fantastic job for us, getting our dream list of exposure. They are great to work with, proactive and on the detail. But above and beyond the campaign work their strategic guidance and counsel on broader brand and marketing issues around sustainability and diversity were invaluable."
