Greenpeace x Everyday Plastic: The Big Plastic Count 2024

The UK's Largest Survey Examining Household Plastic Consumption

The Big Plastic Count the biggest investigation into UK household plastic waste. In 2022, It showed that almost 100 billion pieces of plastic are thrown away in the UK each year, with hardly any of it recycled. The team re-launched the project in 2024 to given new data from the UK to influence the Global Plastics Treaty. To do this, our PR strategy emphasised raising awareness of the campaign launch to recruit people to take part in the count and then earning media attention for the results of the survey.

We launched a second edition of The Big Plastic Count campaign, the UK's largest survey on household plastic consumption. We collaborated with the Greenpeace UK team on media strategy and handled engagement with media throughout the project, this including media handling at schools across the UK and managing broadcast opportunities.

We earned 460+ pieces of coverage – almost triple the amount for the first campaign – across print, online and broadcast media and pressured MPs to make bolder intentions at the Global Plastics Treaty to influence decision-making at the highest level. This included a launch exclusive on Good Morning Britain, and coverage with the likes of Sky News, ITV, The Independent, BBC, The Daily Express and many more. Through out results, we earned the Greenpeace Plastics Treaty team the biggest media peak for the organisation during H1 of 2024.
